Blepharoplasty
What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that rejuvenates the eyes, giving the face a renewed youthful appearance. Blepharoplasty is one of the most common and requested procedures among both women and men between the ages of 30 and 70. Younger patients often request blepharoplasty primarily for aesthetic reasons and require the elimination of bags under the eyelids, while older patients seek blepharoplasty for problems such as reduced field of vision or ptosis. Blepharoplasty allows for the elimination of eyelid folds (ptosis), fatty bags, and in some cases even the lifting of the outer corner of the eye (if requested by the patient). This procedure always pays particular attention to the patient’s gaze, in order to correct but not distort facial features and gaze.
When is blepharoplasty recommended:
- Fat accumulations or bags under the upper and lower eyelids
- Eyes heavy with drooping eyelids, giving them a sad and tired look
- Periorbital skin folds known as “crow’s feet” with sagging skin
Preoperative visit and postoperative course
The preoperative visit with Dr. Manola aims to assess the patient’s general clinical situation and understand their wishes and expectations. Dr. Manola will also prescribe some tests, in addition to routine ones, to ensure that the eye is in perfect health before surgery. Typically, the recommended tests are an eye exam, a tear test, and, if necessary, a visual field study.
Blepharoplasty surgery lasts approximately 45–60 minutes, generally does not require hospitalization, and is performed in a completely safe outpatient setting. Blepharoplasty is performed after preparing the patient with local anesthesia, combined (upon request) with light sedation.
The postoperative recovery from blepharoplasty is usually quick and painless, with minor bruising and swelling. Patients return to their normal daily routine after 4–7 days, during which time they will be able to perform all household tasks. For women (and even men who are comfortable with makeup), the return to social life is quicker thanks to the skillful use of makeup. The results of blepharoplasty are generally definitive and permanent; only in rare cases may a touch-up be required after 10 years.
