Otoplasty
What is otoplasty?
Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that improves certain imperfections of the auricle, such as the notorious “protruding ears.” Otoplasty is usually performed at a young age, even better if performed on children between the ages of 5 and 6, to avoid unpleasant teasing from playmates and classmates.
At that age, the auricle is already formed, and the procedure is definitive.
Otoplasty is recommended for those with:
- Prominent auricles due to the absence of the antihelix
- Prominent auricles due to hypertrophy of the auricular concha
Preoperative visit and postoperative course
The preoperative consultation with Dr. Manola will be essential for assessing the patient’s general condition and, above all, for defining their wishes and expectations.
Dr. Manola will prescribe some routine tests for those wishing to undergo otoplasty.
Otoplasty does not require hospitalization; it is performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia with sedation. Patients are generally discharged one hour after the procedure, which lasts a maximum of one hour. The incision is made behind the ear and not only reshapes and repositions the ear cartilage, but also leaves a virtually invisible scar. Otoplasty lasts between 45 and 6 minutes, and the result is permanent.
The postoperative recovery from otoplasty is usually quick and painless. The patient resumes their normal activities after approximately 4-7 days of rest, during which they must always wear a protective elastic band around their ears. In the period following otoplasty surgery, the band should be worn as much as possible, especially at night for at least a month. Normal social activities can resume after 7 days.
